Learning to start a fire is a classic outdoor survival skill. With the right preparation and supervision, children can safely learn how sparks ignite tinder and build confidence with basic bushcraft techniques.
Important: Parents must supervise children at all times. Practice this activity outside on a porch or in a parking lot with a pan or metal container nearby to safely extinguish the fire.
Preparing Your Fire Starter
Before striking the fire rod, prepare a simple tinder bundle.
Take a makeup remover pad or a cotton ball.
Add a small amount of Vaseline (petroleum jelly) to the pad.
Fluff up the cotton fibers so they catch sparks more easily.
The Vaseline helps the cotton burn longer, giving the spark time to turn into a flame.
Four Ways to Ignite the Pad with a Magnesium Fire Rod
1. Dominant Hand & Foot Method
Place the cotton pad next to your dominant foot.
If you are right‑handed, use your right hand and right foot.
If you are left‑handed, use your left hand and left foot.
Hold the magnesium fire rod in your hand.
Firmly hold your scissors (or whatever scraper you have) and scrape the magnesium fire rod against the non-moving scraper toward the cotton pad.
Sparks should land on the pad and ignite it.
Extinguish the fire using a pan or metal container.
2. Non‑Dominant Hand & Foot Method
Repeat the same steps, but this time use your non‑dominant hand and foot. This helps build coordination and ensures you can start a fire even if your stronger hand isn’t available.
3. One‑Handed Ignition
Place the scissors on the ground and hold them in place with your foot.
Put the cotton pad directly under the tip of the scissors.
Hold the magnesium rod in one hand.
Strike the rod against the scissors to send sparks down onto the pad.
Put out the flame safely when finished.
4. Practice Both Sides
Try the one‑handed method using both your dominant and non‑dominant sides. Being able to start a fire with either hand is a valuable outdoor skill.
🔥 Safety Reminder: Always keep water, sand, or a metal pan nearby to extinguish flames immediately.
